"I will make you awesome at Japanese." -pile of dubbed media
My favorite part about the forums is the sharing of free Internet resources. Buying Hollywood movies dubbed in Japanese is an expensive hobby, so I was thrilled when AJATT+ user Lavita posted this extensive list of Japanese dubbed shows available on NicoNico, and then other users commented with even more links! Now we have Disney movies, Seinfeld, Simpsons, action movies, comedy movies, etc etc… And one user even comments with a link to free Japanese MMORPGS, as if you weren’t doing enough goofing off in Japanese already.
Note: unlike Youtube, NicoNico requires you to make an account, but it’s free! Also, user comments fly across the screen while you watch. At first I wanted to find a way to turn this feature off, but after giving it a try I realized I loved it! It was like watching the movie with a bunch of Japanese people at the same time and listening to [reading] their reactions.
Let’s watch Dawn of the Dead! This is one I couldn’t even find dubbed on DVD.

Do these games require a Japanese IP? When I tried playing MapleStory JP, I was always disconnected from server because of my 外国 IP・・・
I don’t really know entirely, but I’ve found a few games would work but I didn’t really want to play them. Games with any kind of decent production quality at all seem to require you to be in Japan….
If there are exceptions, I’d love to know about it.
If you want to play Maple Story you have to use VPN, or Easy2Game, and your code page has to be in Japanese. ellinforest.com has some good guides, check it out. I find it worth it though, I’m having a great time playing it!
Depending on the game (and if it has player-made servers, the server config), no amount of language changing or IP spoofing will help. A few months ago, I was trying to play on a Korean TF2 server, and within 30 seconds, I would always get kicked. Not because the server knew my Steam client was in English, not because of my IP, but because of my ping. The server was configured to kick players with a lag greater than 300ms. (For comparison, most in-country TF2 servers are under 70ms assuming your ISP is up to snuff, while an overseas server can be anywhere from 250 to 1000 ping (a whole freaking second!)).
You can VPN or Tor it up all you want (and in fact, Tor exit nodes are generally blocked by most gaming services, Steam included), but latency is impossible to fake… (Okay, there’s the net_fakelag command, but that’s an sv_cheat and can only simulate higher lag on a local server.) Even if the server sees traffic coming from a Japanese IP, the ping will tell it that you’re either a dialup user (dafuq are you thinking?) or that an overseas connection is involved.
Pretty much every Korean game/website also requires you to have a Korean SSN to register as well…I mean there are ways to get those but it’s just a pain in the ass and extremely illegal.
That is true, but it wasn’t the case here (Valve Software is an American company 😉 But most servers are user-hosted). I think the whole “use pinglimits to keep overseas players out without explicitly banning 外国人/외국인” was (hopefully) just for server stability instead of deliberately keeping non-Koreans out. When one player has bad ping, the whole server suffers to a certain extent (not to mention “I was behind the wall, that Sniper’s using noclip bullets!”).
Especially that the gamemode in question was Pyro Dodgeball (use airblasts to reflect homing rockets at the other team), and since rockets aren’t lag compensated, it causes even more issues for high-ping players.
I’m learning Russian instead of Japanese, and I really wish there was a better way for people learning other languages to share media. One problem with dubs in Russian is this evil thing called “voice-overs”. Most translated TV shows and movies just have a few people talking over the original audio. It’s a lot less fun, and tougher to listen to. There are still lots of good dubs, but you might have to look around a while to find them. It would be cool even if there were a good place to share what I’ve managed to find (links would mostly be to not-so-legal sites, but knowing what’s available is most of the battle).
I’m learning Russian too. VKontakte has a lot of full-length films in the video section. These days, most (if not all) Disney films and big recent releases are properly dubbed. My main source for dubbed media is less than savoury, but when looking for films and TV shows look for ‘полные дублирование’, they’re the ones without that damn voiceover bollocks.
Some big TV shows that have been properly dubbed that I can think of are LOST, Prison Break and The Last Airbender. But shows don’t really get fully dubbed that often, which sucks. I wish every night for a full dub of Game of Thrones 🙁

rutracker.org is probably the place to find Russian dubs as well as anything else you’re looking for. I use it mainly for Japanese content personally, but it’s really the best site I’ve found online for practically anything you could want in any language. And it’s really well curated (in Russian), with good comments.

Sometimes I like to leave them on, but often they block so much of the screen its impossible to watch and enjoy. Hope this helps.

It’s a forum discussion, not a list, so… hard to copy pasta here.
But follow the link to niconico and try searching for your favorite movies and TV shows. There’s quite a bit out there, so you’re sure to find lots of stuff you want to watch.
Does anyone know of a simliar trove of stuff dubbed into Mandarin? I’m newish (just did my 781st Hanzi) and listening to the radio and mandopop is already starting to drive me out of my tiny little mind. I would do anything to watch Lost dubbed and subbed (except pay, of course – perish the thought!). Things I’ve found so far (with my very non-1337 skills) are either:
1) Not dubbed, just subbed
2) Not dubbed, not even subbed
3) Dead links
4) So slow to load that they might as well be dead links (here’s looking at you, tudou…)
5) Jumpy as hell
Surely there’s a better way…

Anyone know where to find stuff dubbed in Korean?
I would suggest getting involved in Korean ClubBox communities. That seems to be the primary way files are shared over there. I have never found a legitimate Korean P2P program (other than ClubBox if you count that), torrent site, etc.
Now, if you just want native Korean media, there are toooons of places to get all of that. In 1080p no less.
But for dubbed foreign material I would imagine you need to go more native. If you can function in Korean, try poking around on Naver for different people’s ClubBoxes 🙂 Or I think you can also search within the program or something.
NicoNico is pretty awesome. The interface learning curve is a bit steep (oddly enough, the account-creation page can be set to English, but account settings for an existing account is only 日本語で), but once you’ve at least figured out what button does what and how their way-more-complicated-than-YouTube search system works (whaddya mean I can’t find a list of other videos by the same uploader? How do I follow a single series of videos?), it’s definitely a lot of fun. I’ve managed to leverage my desire to watch Minecraft Let’s Plays into a good source of listening practice when I’m on a wireless network and can’t access Japan-A-Radio (their streaming server doesn’t like wifi, or maybe it’s my college’s doing).
FWIW, you *can* get to a user’s videos, just not through search. From the video page, click the user name (box, upper right hand corner below the ad), then choose 投稿動画 (とう・こう・どう・が, submitted videos) from the list at left. Also look for マイリスト links in the description box, they’ll usually have the continuations of a series.
Thanks, very helpful. The other problem I’ve been having trying to figure out this thing is that not only is the video player a weird version of Flash (so Rikaichan won’t work on it), but even the text in the comment list can’t be selected.
I just wish there was a related-videos list as well, not just to follow a series, but also to watch whatever else looks interesting…
For comments, you can right-click and copy them (and then paste/trim as needed for dictionary lookups.) Should be the third option, something like #COMMENTをコピーする. Awkward but sometimes useful for figuring out captioned videos.
Anyone have the opposite, Japanese shows dubbed (not subbed) in English? Preferably on DVD for purchase? There are a few shows I’d like to show to some people, but their English reading skills are not that good.

Anyone know if there’s a way to use something like the Internet Wayback Machine for this? Doing it directly doesn’t work because of Nicovideo’s login requirement, and KeepVid isn’t compatible either.
you just have to get the right movies at the right time. Sometimes movies are blocked, but they come back from time to time, so just watch something else, there’s a lot on nico.

Cool! I remember watching all of the “24” series in Japanese when I lived in Japan. Did wonders for my Japan. I got sick of watching Japanese drams and game shows all the time. I haven’t watch a dubbed movie for quite some time.
Btw, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t watching these shows without paying for them, you know, ILLEGAL?
Downloading a pirated file is illegal. However, streaming media is the responsibility of the hosting site. (This is why Youtube is so heavy-handed in taking down videos.) So, no, viewing media on NicoNico isn’t illegal. (Note: I am not a lawyer.) That said, it’s always *better* to buy media if you can, because it leads to more good media being made.
(But frankly, until media companies wake up and stop making legal purchases easier (ie., no region-encoding) I’m not going to have much sympathy for them.)
I’m not sure why you’re giving legal advice, given that you’re not a lawyer. What exactly is your basis for claiming there’s a legal difference between “downloading” and “streaming”, given that most downloads can be played as they download, and any stream can be saved? Google is happy to remove copyrighted material from Youtube, but they’re also happy to remove copyrighted material from every other service they run.
