Cloze Deletion Modes in Surusu

Cloze deletion modes apply to creating multiple cloze cards only. When creating a single cloze card, all you need do is specify a single clozetext.

  • Default = Normal = Manual mode: Creates the cloze deletions you explicitly specify (separated by whitespace) in the clozetexts box.
    • Example: Clozetexts box input 1 “and you are not it” results in up to 5 cards, of clozetexts “and”, “you”, “are”, “not” and “it” respectively.
  • Eurogram auto mode AKA European grammar mode: Same as manual mode but with some optimizations for definite/indefinite articles and verb endings as are commonly found in European languages. Useful when targeting European grammar and syntax.
  • Random words = Fullsubset auto mode: Given multiple, whitespace-separated clozetexts, selects only a subset — the longest N%, where N≒25% — of the clozetexts and makes cloze deletions out of them. Useful for when you want to make cloze deletions out of, say, a full article 2, but don’t have the time or desire to be selective.
  • Single character = 漢 auto mode = singleton mode: Automatically creates clozetexts and cloze deletions that are exactly 1 character in length. While you do need to supply base clozetext (i.e. input) in the clozetexts box, there is no need for you to manually separate it with whitespace. Great for Chinese MCDs and Japanese syntax MCDs.
    • Example: Clozetexts box input “邯鄲の歩”  results in up to 4 cards, of clozetexts “邯”, “鄲”, “の”, and “歩” respectively.
  • LP = long permutations = LP長文 = ふくわなが(複和長)auto mode = scramble mode: Automatically creates clozetexts and cloze deletions that are 3~7-character-long permutations of the base clozetext 3 you supply. Again, while you do need to supply base clozetext  in the clozetexts box, there is no need for you to manually separate it with whitespace. Great for Japanese syntax and usage MCDs.
    • Example: Clozetexts box input “お前の母ちゃん何人だ” results in cards including (but not limited to): “お前の”, “ちゃん”, “何人だ”, etc.
  • MX = ミックス auto mode = mixed mode: a mixture between singleton mode and scramble mode. Automatically creates clozetexts and cloze deletions that are 1~5-character-long permutations of the base clozetext.
    • Example: Clozetexts box input “お前の母ちゃん何人だ” results in cards including (but not limited to): “の”, “ちゃん”, “何人だ”, etc.
  • Random snippets = 部ぶん集ごう = Japanese subset auto mode: A cross between Fullsubset auto mode and ふくわなが(複和長)scramble mode. Automatically creates clozetexts and cloze deletions that are 1~7-character-long permutations of the base clozetext 4 — so you don’t need to insert your own whitespace — but then only uses a fraction (a subset) of these automatically generated clozetexts (5~25%) to make actual cards.

Notes:

  1. i.e. “base clozetext”
  2. In which case, you’d copy the full text of the article into the clozetexts box…this copying is done for you automatically, but, yeah, you get the idea 😀
  3. i.e. input in the clozetexts box
  4. i.e. input in the clozetexts box
